Veteran Lions DL Speaks Out After Being Benched for Season Opener

Detroit Lions' Isaiah Buggs confirmed he won't play in the season opener after his social media post sparked speculation.

Buggs confirmed he won't play against the Kansas City Chiefs, as the team informed him after practice on September 4.

Buggs said they told him he wouldn't play. This is what we have, and I'll be honest because they were honest with me. I won't be playing.

"I'm good, but remember things can change. #96BALLFOREVER You'll see." - Buggs on Twitter.

Buggs missed practice, sparking trade rumors. The defensive tackle stated that his status with the team is a personal matter and there is nothing to address.

I won't say that. I'm saying this is about life, not football or here. I don't want anyone to misinterpret and exaggerate that. Relationships change. That's all I want to say.

The Lions will replace Buggs with Benito Jones and rookie Brodric Martin at nose tackle.

Martin is excited to be in Kansas City with the fans and O-line, and is looking forward to making plays. The fans will amp me up.

Buggs is disappointed about benching and expected a bigger role this year. He joined the Lions in 2022 after playing three seasons with the Steelers.
